

Russell H. Samson, MD, FACS, RVT, Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery (Vascular) Florida State University Medical School graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School in 1972, receiving the Cottrell Memorial Award for academic excellence and contribution to student affairs. He was the President of the Association of Medical Students of South Africa. Dr. Samson did his internship in General Medicine and Surgery at the Johannesburg Academic Hospital, South Africa, and completed his surgical residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals in New York City. As a resident surgeon, Dr. Samson became active in medical politics ultimately becoming the Vice President of the Physicians National Housestaff Association. Subsequently, he took a one-year fellowship in Peripheral Vascular Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center. He joined the teaching staff at the Al-bert Einstein College of Medicine in 1980, achieving the rank of Associate Professor of Surgery. He moved to Sarasota in 1986. Dr. Samson served as Director of the Noninvasive Vascular Laboratories and as Chief of Vascular Surgery at Bronx Municipal Center, New York City, from 1980-1986, and has served as Chief of Surgery for Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He is the current Director of the vascular laboratory at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Samson has written over 77 scientific papers and 19 textbook chapters related to vascular surgery and has lectured at scientific meetings throughout the U.S. and abroad. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Vascular Surgery and an editor for Seminars in Vascular Surgery, Vascular and the Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. He is the Assistant Editor of the sixth edition of Rutherford’s Textbook of Vascular Surgery, which is the major text in this field. He holds a patent for a new anticoagulant and an instrument-cleaning device for the operating room. He also has developed a widely used stocking treatment for leg ulcers, as well as software programs to assess clinical outcomes.
Dr. Samson was Board Certified in General Surgery in 1980 and was re-certified in 1993. In 1983 he was Board Certified as having Special Qualifications in Vascular Surgery and recertified in 2002. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Southern Association for Vascular Society, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the International Society for Endovascular Therapy, The European Society for Vascular Surgery, The American Venous Forum and is a Founding Member and ex-President of the Florida Vascular Society. In 1999, Dr. Samson was named a Distinguished Fellow of the prestigious Society for Vascular Surgery, an honor bestowed on only 250 practicing vascular surgeons who have achieved international recognition in the field of vascular surgery.
Dr. Samson is married and is the proud father of a grown son and daughter.
